The Spiritual Connection Between Your Menstrual Cycle + the Moon

Have you ever noticed that your period seems to arrive around the same phase of the moon?

Maybe you bleed around the new moon every month, or maybe the full moon!

Or maybe your cycle has absolutely no interest in what the moon is doing.

All three are completely normal.

For thousands of years, humans have looked to the moon as a way of understanding time, nature, fertility, death, rebirth, + the rhythms of life. + because menstruation is itself cyclical, it makes sense that spiritual traditions would eventually begin drawing connections between the two.

+ once I read about the idea that our menstrual cycles + their relationship with the moon could have a spiritual significance + could tell us a lot about the stage our body is in + what it’s communicating to us, I was hooked.

So much so that I waited until my ovulation was synced with the full moon to conceive Hawthorne.

The idea was this: looong before artificial lighting was guiding our days, the sun + moon were. + for the human race to continue, it made sense that women’s cycles would sync up with the moon, specifically ovulating on the full moon + bleeding on the new moon.

Why?

Because the full moon (ovulation time) brought light at night! The perfect opportunity to get it on! While the new moon was dark, a time when a woman who was bleeding was tucked away, taking care of herself. It seems to make evolutionary sense.

But before we do our deep dive, remember this:

Your menstrual cycle doesn't have to perfectly sync with the moon for the moon to be meaningful to you.

In fact, I think the moon can be less of a cosmic schedule telling your body what to do + more of a beautiful mirror that gives you another way to understand the cycles you're already moving through.

So let's get a little woowoo about it.

First, Does the Moon Actually Control Your Period?

Let's separate the science from the spirituality for a second.

The average menstrual cycle is often described as being around 28 days, while the lunar cycle is approximately 29.5 days. That's close enough that people have noticed the similarity for a VERY long time.

But similar lengths don't necessarily mean one causes the other.

Research into whether menstrual cycles consistently synchronize with lunar phases has mixed results. Some studies have found possible associations between menstruation and particular lunar phases in certain groups, while other research has found little or no meaningful synchronization.

+ there are a LOT of variables that influence your menstrual cycle, including hormones, stress, sleep, nutrition, age, medications, health conditions, + individual biology.

So no, the moon isn't necessarily reaching down from the sky and telling your ovaries what to do.

But that doesn't make the symbolism meaningless, because humans have always used the natural world as a way to understand ourselves.

+ the moon happens to be a pretty spectacular metaphor for a body that is constantly moving through cycles of change.

So here’s some insight into what YOUR particular cycle might be telling you about the phase your body, your spirit, + your life is in.

The White Moon Cycle: Bleeding With the New Moon

If your period tends to begin around the new moon, many modern spiritual traditions refer to this as a White Moon Cycle.

The new moon is the darkest point of the lunar cycle. The moon isn't visible in the night sky, yet this invisible phase represents the beginning of a new cycle.

Energetically, it's associated with:

🌑rest

🌑introspection

🌑renewal

🌑planting seeds

🌑new beginnings

🌑nurturing

🌑inward focus

+ if you're bleeding at the same time?

The symbolism is pretty beautiful.

Your body is already asking you to slow down, turn inward, + release what it no longer needs while the moon is doing essentially the same thing symbolically.

Spiritually, the White Moon Cycle is often associated with the Mother archetype.

Not necessarily literal motherhood.

Think nurturing energy.

✨Creating.

✨Growing.

✨Tending.

✨Planting something that isn't ready to be seen yet.

This can be a beautiful time to journal, rest, dream about what's next, or allow yourself to exist without constantly trying to produce something.

Something I really want to emphasize:

You don't have to be pregnant, want children, or identify with motherhood for the Mother archetype to resonate with you.

Creation can mean a business, relationship, creative project, new version of yourself, or a life you've been building behind the scenes.

Sometimes creation begins with doing absolutely nothing except giving something enough space to grow.

The Red Moon Cycle: Bleeding With the Full Moon

Now we get to the other famous pairing.

If you tend to menstruate around the full moon, many spiritual traditions refer to this as a Red Moon Cycle.

The Full Moon represents illumination, visibility, culmination, + peak energy.

Symbolically, this makes the Red Moon Cycle very different from the White Moon Cycle.

The spiritual archetypes associated with it are often the:

🌕Healer.

🌕Wise Woman.

🌕Witch.

🌕Teacher.

Instead of energy being directed primarily inward, it's associated with taking what you've learned and bringing it outward.

This can symbolize:

✨creativity

✨intuition

✨transformation

✨sensuality

✨leadership

✨teaching

✨community

✨emotional release

The full moon is traditionally a time when things become visible + menstruation is literally a process of release.

So spiritually, this pairing can represent releasing what you've outgrown while bringing hidden truths into the light.

Maybe that's an old belief, or a relationship dynamic.

Maybe it's a version of yourself you've been performing for other people or maybe it's simply the realization that you don't want the thing you thought you wanted anymore.

That's information, too.

But What If You Don't Bleed During the New or Full Moon?

This is where I want you to throw the idea of having a "perfect" lunar cycle directly out the window.

Your body is not failing spirituality because your period arrives during a random Tuesday in the waning crescent moon.

There are other ways of looking at your cycle. THE FUN CONTINUES!

The Pink Moon Cycle: Bleeding During the Waxing Moon

The waxing moon is moving toward fullness.

It's growing, building, gathering light.

If your period begins during this phase, some spiritual traditions associate it with:

🌔growth

🌔momentum

🌔decision-making

🌔preparation

🌔building

🌔emerging confidence

The symbolism here is interesting because your body is releasing while the moon is building.

You might think of it as:

What am I releasing so I have more energetic space to build?

Maybe you're clearing out an old habit before beginning a new one, realizing what isn't working before you make a change, or being asked to trust that release and growth can happen simultaneously.

The Purple Moon Cycle: Bleeding During the Waning Moon

The waning moon is moving away from fullness + its light is decreasing.

Spiritually, this phase is often associated with:

🌘release

🌘reflection

🌘integration

🌘healing

🌘completion

🌘solitude

🌘surrender

If your period begins during the waning moon, you may find this symbolism particularly resonant.

It's an invitation to ask:

What am I ready to put down?

Not everything needs to be fixed, not every situation needs another conversation, + (IMPORTANT) not every relationship needs to be saved.

Sometimes healing is recognizing that something has completed its purpose in your life + that’s still beautiful.

The waning moon reminds us that becoming smaller isn't always a loss; it's often how we make room.

Why Did Humans Make These Connections in the First Place?

This connection between women, fertility, + the moon isn't some new TikTok invention.

Ancient civilizations tracked the moon for practical reasons because lunar cycles were one of the most obvious natural rhythms available to humans.

The moon helped people track time, seasons, tides, festivals, + agricultural rhythms.

And menstruation is one of the most visible biological cycles many women experience.

So it isn't surprising that cultures eventually created symbolic connections between the two.

The moon itself has also carried feminine associations across many spiritual traditions, although those associations vary enormously between cultures.

Some traditions connected lunar cycles with fertility + motherhood while others emphasized the moon's connection with death + rebirth, intuition, mystery, or transformation.

This is important because there isn't one universal ancient belief that says, "Everyone's period is supposed to sync with the moon."

The modern White Moon + Red Moon framework is largely a contemporary spiritual interpretation of older lunar + menstrual symbolism.

tbh, I think that's perfectly okay.

Spirituality is a conversation between ancient symbolism + the way we understand ourselves today.

How to Actually Work With Your Cycle + the Moon

Instead of trying to force your period into a particular lunar phase, just observe it

That's where this gets really interesting.

1. Track both for three to six months.

Write down:

✨When did my period begin?

✨What phase was the moon in?

✨How was I feeling emotionally?

✨How was my energy?

✨What was happening in my life?

You might start noticing patterns.

+ they may have absolutely nothing to do with the moon. That's okay, too!

Maybe you notice that you're consistently more emotional before your period, or you feel incredibly creative during the waxing moon.

Maybe every Full Moon makes you want to reorganize your entire house or yourcycle changes when you're stressed.

The point isn't to find evidence for something you already believe.

The point is to pay attention.

2. Stop Asking Which Cycle Is "Better."

This one is important!

There is a tendency in spiritual spaces to romanticize the White Moon Cycle as somehow more feminine, fertile, or "aligned."

+ then the Red Moon Cycle gets portrayed as the wild, powerful, witchy one.

Neither is better, neither makes you more intuitive, neither means you're more spiritually evolved.

Your body is not taking an astrology exam + your cycle can change throughout your life, + you’ll likely find that your cycle travels through all of the moon phases throughout the year!

You might experience a White Moon Cycle for years + then suddenly begin bleeding during the Full Moon.

That doesn't mean you've become a different person.

It might just mean your menstrual cycle changed.

Let the symbolism inform you without allowing it to define you.

3. Create a Ritual Around Your Bleed

This doesn't have to be complicated.

Take a bath, light a candle, journal, sit outside under the moon, diffuse an oil you associate with grounding, +/or put your phone away for 20 minutes.

Ask yourself:

✨What am I releasing?

✨What am I learning?

✨What needs more of my attention?

✨What am I ready to stop carrying?

You don't need to perform some elaborate ritual for it to count. Often the most spiritual thing you can do is give yourself permission to rest.

4. Use the Moon as a Mirror, Not a Rulebook

This might be my fave way to think about all of this.

The moon doesn't have to dictate your behavior.

It can just give you a language for reflection.

If you're bleeding during the new moon, maybe that symbolism of rest + renewal resonates.

Full Moon? Maybe the themes of release and illumination speak to you.

If your period arrives during the waxing moon, maybe you're thinking about what you're building.

During the waning moon? Perhaps you're reflecting on what you're ready to leave behind.

Or maybe none of those descriptions resonate at all.

Your body gets the final say.

Your Cycle Is Already Cyclical

You don't need your period to sync perfectly with the moon to have a spiritual relationship with your cycle.

Your body is already teaching you about:

rest + activity.

expansion + contraction.

creation + release.

beginnings + endings.

The moon gives us another beautiful reflection of those same rhythms.

Maybe that's why humans have been fascinated by it for thousands of years.

We look up at the night sky and see something that is constantly changing but always remains itself. Sounds a lot like us.

The next time you notice where you are in your menstrual cycle, look up at the moon, too.

Not to ask whether you're doing it "right,” but to ask:

✨What phase am I in?

✨What is this season asking of me?

✨What can I honor instead of trying to override?

The magic isn't in perfectly syncing your body with the moon, it’s in realizing that you were cyclical all along.

Muah muah muah!
