What’s the Deal with Simmer Pots? ft Abundance Simmer Pot Recipe
There’s something deeply soothing about a pot bubbling away on the stove, filling your home with warmth, scent, + intention, ESPECIALLY as the weather cools + the leaves change + the energy of the earth moves inward toward hearth work + introspection. I know I said “and” a lot. It’s fine.
Simmer pots are one of my favorite ways to bring spirituality into the everyday. They’re simple, pretty AF, + powerful, a reminder that you can infuse magic into your life with whatever’s already in your kitchen; it never has to be complicated or take a long ritual.
The History of Simmer Pots
Simmer pots, sometimes called stovetop potpourri or kitchen witch brews, have been around for centuries. They trace back to old folk traditions where the hearth, the home’s fire or stove, was seen as sacred. It was where meals were made, families gathered, + energy was renewed.
Fun fact: in feng shui the stove represents wealth + prosperity, perfect for the recipe down below.
In Europe, kitchen witches used simmer pots to bless their homes, often aligning them with moon cycles or the changing seasons. In Appalachian folk magic, boiling herbs was both practical + spiritual, a way to cleanse energy while making the home smell incredible. Many cultures also used the steam from simmering herbs + fruit as a form of purification. The rising vapor was believed to carry prayers and intentions up to the divine.
So, yes, your simmer pot is a little spell in disguise, an act of mindfulness, magic, + care.
The Purpose Behind the Practice
At its core, a simmer pot is intentional aromatherapy. You fill a pot with water, herbs, fruits, + spices, then let it gently simmer so their aroma fills the space. As the fragrance spreads, so does the energy of the plants you’ve chosen.
Each ingredient has its own vibrational purpose. Cinnamon draws in abundance. Citrus calls in joy. Rosemary clears out stagnant energy. Together, they shift the frequency of your space +, in turn, your energy. Similar to diffusing essential oils that carry throughout your home the frequency of the plant(s) within it. Diffuse Joy for 15 minutes in your home after an argument and feel the energy settle.
People use simmer pots to:
Cleanse heavy or negative energy
Invite in love, abundance, clarity, or protection
Honor moon cycles or seasonal transitions
Set intentions for manifestation
Ground + calm the energy of their home
I enjoy using this reference guide to identify which plants I want to use in my simmer pots based on my intentions + the symbolism + spiritual association of the plants.
How Simmer Pots Work Energetically
Simmer pots engage all four elements, which is what makes them such a potent little ritual:
Water represents emotions + intuition.
Fire activates transformation + release.
Air (the steam) carries your prayers + energy through the space.
Earth (the herbs and fruits) grounds your intentions in the physical world.
Together, they create balance. When you simmer your ingredients with intention, your kitchen becomes a sacred space.
The Modern “Woowoo” Take
Lately, simmer pots have made a comeback… OBVIOUSLY. They’re effortless, accessible, + a sensory experience. You don’t need elaborate rituals or fancy tools. Just a pot, some herbs, + a clear intention.
It’s the perfect slow moment in a busy day. A chance to pause, stir your pot, breathe deeply, + say something as simple as:
“I welcome abundance, harmony, and joy into this home.”
That’s all it takes.
