Why Do Woowoo Babes Sprinkle Cinnamon at Their Front Door?
If you've spent any time on spiritual TikTok or Instagram, you've probably seen someone blowing cinnamon through their front door on the first of the month to "call in abundance" + probably with that “WAKE UP! IT’S THA FIRST OF THA MONTH!” audio that we love.
At first glance, it can seem random, but this practice is actually muuuch older than social media.
Where Did This Ritual Come From?
Cinnamon has been one of the world's most prized spices for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations including Egypt, Rome, China, + many cultures throughout the Middle East valued cinnamon so highly that it was once worth more than silver in some regions!
It wasn't just used in cooking. Cinnamon appeared in perfumes, medicines, religious ceremonies, + offerings. Because it was difficult to obtain + expensive to trade, owning cinnamon became a symbol of wealth, prosperity, + status.
Over time, many folk traditions began connecting cinnamon with abundance + good fortune.
Why the Front Door?
In many spiritual traditions, the front door is considered the energetic "mouth" of the home. It's the place where people, opportunities, relationships, + blessings enter your space.
You'll even hear this idea in feng shui, where the front entrance is called the "mouth of qi," or the place where life force energy flows into the home.
So if cinnamon has long represented prosperity, placing it at the entrance became a symbolic way of welcoming abundance before it crossed your threshold.
How People Practice This Today
The most common version of this ritual happens on the first day of each month.
Many people place a small pinch of ground cinnamon in the palm of their hand, stand outside their front door, and gently blow the cinnamon inward while setting an intention for the month ahead.
Some people choose a simple affirmation like:
"May this home be filled with abundance, joy, peace, + opportunities that are aligned for me."
Others simply take a quiet moment to reflect on what they're hoping to welcome into their lives.
There's no "right" script. Ignore any rules. It’s the intention behind the ritual matters the most, far more than the exact words you use.
If you don't want cinnamon powder on your doorstep, you can also place cinnamon sticks in a decorative bowl near your entryway as a visual reminder of the abundance you're intentionally creating. I sometimes will keep a stick of cinnamon above my doorway (along with a bit of selenite + black tourmaline.
Is It Magic?
I don't personally believe cinnamon has magical powers.
BUT
I think rituals like this give us something just as valuable: intention.
Every time you walk through your front door, you're reminded of what you're choosing to focus on. Instead of entering your home carrying stress, scarcity, or overwhelm, you're greeted by a symbol of possibility.
Intention is sorely lacking today in a world where success + productivity fill our thoughts, where most of our days are spent in offices checking off to-dos while simultaneously thinking of OTHER to-dos that we have when we get home over the weekend.
Intention + presence have become luxuries, things we carve out time for, instead of integrated parts of our everyday schedules.
Whether you view it as energy work, a mindfulness practice, or just a meaningful tradition, the ritual becomes less about changing the universe + more about changing your awareness + intentinon.
+ honestly that’s the whole purpose of being a Woowoo Babe: leaning into more presence + intention.
The Takeaway
Sprinkling cinnamon at your front door isn't about hoping money suddenly falls from the sky.
It's about intentionally creating a home + a mindset that's open to receiving opportunities, gratitude, joy, + abundance in whatever form they arrive.
Sometimes the smallest rituals become the most powerful reminders of the life we're trying to build!!
